Fuel Tank Access

Background

Tank access positions

Fuel tank showing sending unit and fuel pump locations for access covers

The OEM Mustang tank is strapped underneath the rear chassis tubing.

Unless access to the fuel level sending unit and the in-tank EFI fuel pump is made available through the trunk aluminum panel, the tank must be dropped for any maintenance work.

Therefore, custom covers will be fabricated for both access locations with powder coating to match the trunk panels.

Location

The following measurements are from the trunk centerline defined by the V-shaped chassis bar in the trunk middle.

Fuel level sending unit

  • 3.5” left of centerline
  • 6.5” up from the bottom edge of flat trunk area

Fuel pump

  • 12.75” right of centerline
  • 7.5” up from the bottom edge

Access covers

A convenient and inexpensive access cover is the 4×4 plate used to cover electrical boxes; Home Depot, for example, sells them for $0.59 each. Mark FFR 10561 aluminium panel, thrunk floor, main corgo area for 2.75” holes positioned as described above, and covered by 4×4 plates.

  • use position measurements above
  • temporarily install fuel tank to check access locations (optional)
  • trace 2.75” cutout holes for both sending unit and fuel pump
  • cut holes with hole saw and finish edges with file
  • drill for cover plate sheet metal screw attachments
  • fasten with self-tapping sheet metal screws left over from mounted aluminum (FFR 14677)
  • powder coat covers to match other aluminum panels
