Build Budget

This pro-forma Mk3.1 non-donor build budget reflects kit and part prices as of April 2008, excluding shipping and taxes. Amounts are rounded to the nearest $100. Excludes build school, tools and supplies, vehicle registration fees, vehicle sales tax, builder labor cost (approximately 650 to 900 hours) and any other professional services (like welding, vehicle transport, suspension alignment and dyno testing). This represents a realistic cost estimate for the Roadster described on this site (see Mk3.1 Specifications} and assumes a professional body prep and paint job.

Kit or part description (direct component parts only, excludes tools, supplies) Cost in 2008-09
FFR Mk3.1 Complete Kit¹ with IRS upgrade, body cut-outs, leather seats $22,600
Breeze EzePak with Ford Racing Boss 302¹, T5, Mass-Flo EFI $14,000
Team III Halibrand replica wheels with Sumitomo tires, balanced $2,500
customizations² (see also order history) $3,900
body prep, paint, no stripes, rolled edges, riveted scoop (see body modifications and paint plan) $7,500
extras: snapless tonneau cover, car cover, battery, fluids $500
TOTAL¹ $51,000

¹ Budget based on 2008 Winter Sale with $500 credit towards IRS upgrade plus free leather seat upgrade; as of February 2010, comparable FFR Complete Kit pricing is approximately $500 lower due to discounted pricing as a result of the Mk4 introduction, and Breeze EzePak is about $300 lower but now includes the Ford Racing XEFMS instead of the Boss 302 engine; with the Boss 302 substituted, the Breeze EzePak would be $1,100 higher. The FFR price for the comparable Mk4 Complete kit is approximately $24,600 versus a discounted $22,100 for the Mk3.

² optional part cost as of 2008-09; cost of FFR wind wings and PS roll bar included in this line item

An all-in, complete cost budget for this build ∼ including tools, taxes, shipping and transport, professional labor, build school, registration, and so on ∼ of approximately $60,000 is a reasonable estimate for 2008-09 assuming that the workspace is part of a personal residence that is available without any additional expense or build-out.

Pro forma 2010 budget

The following pro forma budget is based on estimated or announced 2010 prices that match the original 2008-09 specifications above.

Kit or part description Mk3.1 Mk4
FFR Complete Kit with IRS upgrade, body cut-outs, leather seats $22,100¹ $24,600
Breeze EzePak with Ford Racing Boss 302, T5, Mass-Flo EFI $15,100 $15,100
Team III Halibrand replica wheels with Sumitomo tires, balanced $2,500 $2,500
customizations² (see also order history) $3,900 $3,700
body prep, paint, no stripes, rolled edges, riveted scoop (see body modifications and paint plan) $7,500 $7,000³
extras: snapless tonneau cover, car cover, battery, fluids $500 $500
TOTAL¹ $51,600 $53,400

¹ Discounted Mk3.1 Complete Kit due to introduction of Mk4 in early 2010, limited time availability
² Cost of FFR wind wings and PS roll bar included in this line item; Mk4 now includes hidden trunk hinges
³ Assumes $500 cost reduction due to improved Mk4 body shell

Compared to the 2008-09 Mk3.1 build, a comparable 2010 Mk3.1 would cost 1% more, and a 2010 Mk4 would cost 5% more. An all-in, complete cost ∼ including tools, taxes, shipping and transport, professional labor, build school, registration, and so on ∼ for a 2010-11 build as outlined on this site is estimated to be in the $61,000 to $64,000 range.

The average Roadster budget of $30,000 to $35,000, as reported in pre-2009 builder surveys, generally reflects kit acquisition costs from 2005-08, Mustang donor builds implying an engine/transmission with over 75,000 miles and harvested parts over fifteen years old, standard Mustang rear suspension (not IRS), inexpensive wheels, and factory (not high performance) EFI technology. In contrast, the budget above describes a 2009 all-new vehicle with premium high performance capabilities.

In a 2009 FFCars forum survey of over 250 projects, about a third of FFR builders spent under $30,000, a third between $30,000 and $40,000, and a third over $40,000. Many of these builds were completed several years ago and reflect lower labor and part costs.

The Mk3 described on this site took approximately 130 days to assemble and complete, with each day representing between 5 and 7 hours of work, for a total project time of 650-900 hours. Elapsed time was 16 months (no activity during late fall/winter/early spring).
