Numbers

  • 1320 - Distance, in feet, of a 1/4 mile
  • 19 lb, 24 lb, 30 lb … - indicates pounds of fuel per hour for fuel injectors
  • 1.6 RR - 1.6” Roller Rockers
  • 3G - alternator without external fan on SN95, higher output
  • 302 - also called 5.0 or 5.0L, a small block Ford engine; in 1968 shorter connecting rods boosted displacement to 302 cubic inches; Ford discontinued this engine in 1996
  • 315/60 - tire size example
  • 351 - Ford engine
  • 351W - Ford Windsor series
  • 351C - Ford Cleveland big block series
  • 385 - Ford other big block series
  • 3-link - type of suspension; alternative is IRS or 4-link
  • 3.55 - gear ratio; the higher the ratio, the higher the engine RPM to tire RPM
  • 4-link - type of suspension; alternative is IRS or 3-link
  • 427 S/C - refers to 427 Semi-Competition or Street Competition Cobra body and trim style circa 1965
  • 4.6 or 4.6L - Ford small block engine
  • 5.0 or 5.0L - designates 5 liter displacement; commonly refers to a 4.948 liter Ford 302 cubic inch engine
  • 8.8 - Ford rear end size, in inches

  • A9L - a type of EEC computer
  • AFR - Air Flow Research
  • AN - Army-Navy fitting used on engine plumbing like brake master cylinder hoses (see article)
  • ATDC - After Top Dead Center; indicates timing degrees relative to TDC (Top Dead Center), see also BTDC
  • BAP - Barometric Absolute Pressure sensor
  • BB - Big Block engine
  • BBK - an aftermarket parts manufacturer; vendor to FFR for headers
  • B Cam or B303 - camshaft from Ford Racing
  • bezel - metal finishing ring
  • Boss 302 - High performance 302 Ford Racing engine (used on this build); see also 302
  • Breeze - Breeze Automotive, a vendor
  • BRG - British Racing Green color
  • BTDC - Before Top Dead Center; see also ATDC and TDC
  • carbed - a normally aspirated, or carburetor, engine; alternative is electronic fuel injection (EFI)
  • clevis - a type of fastener that will allow rotation of the connected parts about the axis of the pin
  • CSX - Carroll Shelby Exports, part of the number identification codes that went on Cobras, see also Vehicle Identification discussion
  • cut pile - type of carpet frequently used in post-1980 American cars
  • CV - Constant Velocity joint used in IRS suspension

  • dB - decibels, a measure of sound intensity
  • DD tube or Double D - a part of steering column shaft
  • dizzy - slang for rotating automotive distributor
  • DOHC - Double (or Dual) Overhead Cam
  • DP - Double Pumper
  • DS - Driver side, associated with PS (passenger side)
  • D.S.S. - an aftermarket engine supplier
  • DVSF - Double Venom Spring Fling
  • double clevis - see also celvis, a fastener shaped like an “X” with two pins that allow rotation
  • ears - rear axle connection points on differential, also called “pumpkin ears”, see also pumpkin
  • E Cam or E303 - camshaft from Ford Racing
  • ECT - Engine Coolant Temperature sensor
  • EEC - Engine Electronic Controller or Computer
  • EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection; alternative is normally aspirated engine with a carburetor
  • EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculation
  • elephant ears - FFR front wheel well aluminum panels that resemble large ears
  • F-panel - aluminum panel attached behind and above IFS, shaped like an F
  • FE - Ford 332/352/390/406/410/427/428 big blocks
  • ferrel - metal ring placed around a shaft for reinforcement or to secure a joint
  • ferrule - cap, usually attached with a crimping tool, for wire ends
  • FFCars - the FFR builder forums hosted at FFCars.com, previously known as FFCobra
  • FFR - Factory Five Racing
  • FFROG - Factory Five Racing Owner's Group
  • FMS - Ford Motor Sports, a parts supplier
  • FMU - Fuel Management Unit; boost sensitive pressure unit that closes off the return fuel line
  • Fox - refers to 87-93 Mustang frame, suspension, drive train
  • FPR - Fuel Pressure Regulator
  • FR - Flaming River, a steering rack brand
  • FRPP - Ford Racing Performance Parts
  • ft.lb. - foot pound, a measure of torque

  • gel coat - protective coating on fiberglass, refers to the unfinished Roadster shell (black on Mk3, red on Mk4)
  • go cart - refers to a functioning Factory Five Roadster without the body
  • graduation - to complete the FFR kit including paint and vehicle registration
  • HB - Halibrand, a vintage wheel style
  • HEI - High Energy Ignition
  • HF - Harbor Freight tool supply company
  • hotfoot - uncomfortable condition caused by insufficient cockpit insulation in footbox area
  • I*2 - ISquared wiring harness
  • IAC - Idle Air Control (solenoid)
  • IAT - Intake Air Temperature sensor
  • IFS - Independent Front Suspension
  • IRS - Independent Rear Suspension; alternative is 3-link or 4-link

J K L

  • KAM - Keep-Alive Memory, part of the EFI computer system
  • KB - Kenne Bell supercharger, forces air into combustion chamber for higher speeds
  • King pin - see KPIA
  • KOEO - Key On Engine Off, status to check EEC codes
  • KPIA - King Pin Inclination Angle, a component of suspension geometry, see FFR Mk4 modification
  • LCA - Lower Control Arm of front or rear suspension

M N O

  • MAF or MAS - Mass Air Flow sensor
  • Mark I, Mark 1, or Mk1 - prototype 1993 FFR Roadster was developed into a commercial kit in 1995
  • Mark II, Mark 2, or Mk2 - upgraded FFR Roadster model introduced June 2002
  • Mark III, Mark 3, or Mk3 - upgraded FFR Roadster model introduced May 2004
  • Mark 3.1, Mark 3,1, or Mk3.1 - upgraded FFR Roadster model introduced January 2008 that encompasses the Complete Kit first shipped in September 2007
  • Mark IV, Mark 4, or Mk4 - upgraded FFR Roadster model introduced January 2010, see FFR Mk4
  • MC - Master Cylinder, part of brake system
  • meatballs - circular racing numbers located on Roadster door panels or body
  • NA - Naturally Aspirated (as opposed to blown or supercharged)

  • pancake - classic circular (or oval) air filter design
  • PB - Power Brakes
  • PBR - brake manufacturer
  • PDO - Pin Drive Option IRS from FFR
  • PDW = Pin Drive Width IRS from FFR

  • PM - Private Message on FFR forum
  • POM -Picture Of the Month on FFR forum
  • PS - Power Steering
  • PS - Passenger side, associated with DS (driver side)
  • pumpkin - rear differential, see also ears
  • PV - Piston to Valve clearance
  • RAL - German paint matching system with 4-digit codes
  • rolled edge - smooth finish for body contour, usually refers to cockpit surround and other openings, see FFR Mk4
  • Ron Francis - manufacturer of FFR 3.1 Complete Kit wiring harness
  • R&R - remove and replace
  • RWHP - Rear Wheel Horse Power

  • S2000 button - Honda's red Start Engine button
  • SB - small block 289/302/351W engines
  • S/C - Semi/Competition, a designation for the rare (only 30 production vehicles) and iconic Shelby Cobra 427 S/C
  • SC - Speed Control; no SC on Cobra
  • SD - Speed Density (87-88 Mustang) air control system
  • Shelby - the American racer/automotive designer Carroll Shelby and/or his stable of cars, including the Shelby Cobra and Mustang
  • SIG - Special Interest Group in FFR forum
  • SN95 - 94-95 Mustang frame, suspension, drive train
  • SOHC - Single Overhead Cam
  • spout - plug connector, located near distributor, that disengages computer when timing is set on EFI systems
  • stroker - any engine with a modified stroke length
  • T5 - Borg Warner T5 transmission, 5 speed V8 Mustang
  • TB - Throttle Body
  • T-Bird SC - Thunderbird Super Coupe, an IRS donor
  • TDC - Top Dead Center, a measure of piston travel; Ford 302 number 1 cylinder, used for timing with TDC, is on passenger side front of engine
  • TFS - Trick Flow Specialties
  • TKO - model of Tremec 5-speed transmission, heavy duty
  • TPS - Throttle Position Sensor
  • Tremec - 5-speed transmission, non-Ford, heavy duty
  • TTO - Trailing Throttle Oversteer, a potentially dangerous rapid rear-to-front load shift due to throttle release in turns
  • UCA - Upper Control Arms of front or rear suspension

V W X Y Z

  • VIN - Vehicle Identification Number; original AC Cobras were manufactured prior to the modern VIN system
  • VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor
