Torque Specifications

Background

Torque is the measure of the force applied to produce rotational motion and is determined by multiplying the applied force by the distance from the pivot point to the point where the force is applied (that is: Torque = Force x Moment Arm). In the English system, torque is measured in foot-pounds, abbreviated as as ft-lb, or inch-pounds. In the Metric system, torque is measured in Newton-meters, abbreviated as MM. Useful conversions are:

  • 8.851 inch-pounds = 1 Newton-meter
  • 1 foot-pound = 12 inch-pounds
  • 16 ounce-inches = 1 inch-pound

General torque

Use this general torque guideline for zinc plated (and stainless where noted) dry bolts unless otherwise specified for various assembly and functional use.

Torque seal

Applying torque seal is an inexpensive method to detect vibration loosening. This seal is applied to compression fittings, studs, nuts, parts, and assemblies after proper torque and/or position has been verified. Visually inspection can then detect any movement since torque seal becomes brittle and will crack under any movement. With fast-drying adhesion to all metals and to most other surfaces, torque seal can be coded to different torque settings by using different high visibility, daylight fluorescing colors:

  • green = under 50 ft-lb
  • yellow = 50-75 ft-lb
  • orange = 75-100 ft-lb
  • red = over 100 ft-lb
